Pall Mall introduced the 85mm long 'King Size' unfiltered cigarette in the 1940's but the 'regular size' 76mm long cigarette brands Camel and Lucky Strike dominated the market until 1960 when Pall Mall became the top selling brand in America. Marlboro was introduced in 1955 in a flip-top box with cork-tipped "selectrate" filter. Due to growing public awareness over reports linking smoking to lung disease, smokers began switching to filtered cigarettes designed to reduce the amount of "tar" and nicotine they inhaled. In the 1960's King-Size filtered cigarettes from Kent and Winston became the top selling brands with Lucky Strike, Pall Mall and others quickly introducing King-Size filtered versions. Marlboro began it's reign as the number one cigarette brand in the early 1970's and nowadays regular 76mm long unfiltered cigarette brands are nearly extinct.

MYO filtered cigarette tubes adopted the KS (King Size) length standard of 84mm, although the typical filter in an MYO tube is 15mm long (a standard that appears to have come from Europe) which is significantly shorter than most commercially manufactured cigarettes. Recently the MYO industry has begun to produce tubes with longer filters of 17mm, 20mm and even 25mm to meet the expectations of consumers. For reasons which are still not totally clear to me, the standard diameter for MYO tubes has remained 8.1mm, which is slightly larger than the 7.8mm dia. standard of most manufactured filtered cigarettes.

Full Flavor MYO cigarette tubes normally have 15mm to 17mm long filters. The filters in Light and Mild cigarette tubes can vary from 15mm to 25mm as I mentioned above, short filtered tubes are generally constructed with perforations in the tipping paper near the filter, which introduces air into the smoke stream. Non-perforated Light tubes use a more porous cigarette paper or longer filters and/or HD (High Density) compressed filter materials. Some Light tubes use a combination of these techniques to create a smoother, milder smoking experience.

100mm long filter tubes are also becoming more common and are now available in regular or light versions from several manufacturers. Many tube manufacturers also offer Menthol versions of their KS Full Flavor tubes, and at least one brand also offers a 100mm Menthol tube. While most MYO tubes are made from bleached white paper, there are at least one brown and one black cigarette tube brand currently available. 'Ultra Slim' tubes are also available under several brand names, these are only 6.5mm in diameter (slimmer than a Virginia Slim) and require a special injector. Most MYO flitered tubes come in boxes of 200 (or 250), some specialty tubes are packaged in boxes of 100.
